Samantha and her drummer, Darius created a fully rounded beautiful sound, something of an achievement for a a two piece band, a drummer and one guitarist/singer, a true test of pure musicianship, oh did I mention this woman can whistle too?

Samantha has a powerful voice and is an excellent guitarist, she entranced the crowd immediately, and proceeded to immersing us all in a sunny feeling, funky yet rocking set of music, a great respite from a cold Utah winters night. This is the beginning of a tour in support of her latest CD Carefree. Samantha said she was inspired and influenced my many artists but gave a special nod to Joni Mitchell, who is in my opinion one of the greatest artists (poet, singer, songwriter, painter) of the last 40 years. Jeremy Lawton, keyboardist and slide guitar player from the band Big Head Todd and the Monsters joined Samatha and Darius on stage and proved that this girl can rock hard if she wants to, I found myself thinking about an what an album would be like with this trio would sound like, it would be a very cool sound indeed.

‘Cali-soul’ is the term Samantha Stollenwerck uses to describe her sound; a unique blend of soulful pop rock that has landed her on bills with the likes of Dave Matthews Band and Ziggy Marley. Samantha fuses the elements of catchy songwriting and funky undertones with a fresh west coast vibe of rock and roll to create a style all her own.

This past year Samantha completed a record titled “Carefree” with producer, Jeff Trott. Jeff is best known for his work with Sheryl Crow, having penned several of Crow’s hit songs such as “Everyday is a Winding Road” and “If it Makes You Happy” as well as was Sheryl’s touring guitar player for over a decade. Stollenwerck and Trott’s chemistry in the studio gave permission for Samantha’s authentic voice and personality to resonate through in her songs.

Samantha also collaborated with songwriter Danielle Brisebois who is accredited with several hit songs including Natasha Bedingfield’s singles, “Unwritten” and “Pocket Full of Sunshine”. Samantha rounded out her record by bringing aboard Grammy Award winning mixer, Manny Marroquin (Alicia Keyes, Usher, Kanye West) to bump up the grooves and add the unique sound that “Carefree” represents.
