History

As noted in Rolling Stone, "… when Garcia passed away in 1995, and the Grateful Dead went on hiatus, Seals took charge. Under his leadership, the slightly renamed ‘JGB Band’ pays tribute to Garcia by performing his songs and remaining faithful to his style.

In 1996, Seals played several concerts with Jerry Garcia Band bassist John Kahn and other former members of that band. Their idea was to continue playing the same music with everyone except Garcia himself. However, Kahn died three weeks later, and Seals and the others continued without him. The membership of JGB has continued to evolve over the years.

Melvin is best known for his long friendship and musical partnership with cultural icon and guitarist Jerry Garcia and the smile of his that lights up the room. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become "Jam Band Music". From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up. Melvin and JGB brings an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table.

With acoustic and electric ingredients and unique combinations of guitar, mandolin, slide and lap steel with savory bass, hearty drums and, of course, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that keeps audiences dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for several hours. Melvin is pioneering a path deeper into the musical territory he helped to establish.

Guitarist-singer Stu Allen, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, joined Melvin Seals & JGB in June 2004 and appears on the ‘Keepers of the Flame’ album. With his eagerness to improvise and his commitment to making every performance unique, Stu has made extensive contributions to the jam music scene. In the early 1990′s, he co-founded the Minnesota-based acoustic-electric jam band, Blue Man Jive. The Jive only produced one studio effort: Playing God ; however, the band was prolific in original material, which they unfolded and continued to develop through their many live performances. In addition, he is a founding member of The Jones Gang , Minneapolis’ premier Grateful Dead tribute band, to which he still lends his talents. A resident of San Francisco, Stu continues to explore, experiment, create, and recreate, within a variety of musical styles. He can’t wait to get out on the road so he can come and play for you folks. Despite reports by some reputable publications, Stu has never played with Dark Star Orchestra (“but that sounds like fun,” he grins).
